Sturgeon Point Lighthouse

Sturgeon Point sketch

This small lighthouse was built in 1924 by a local developer to mark a small subdivision near Sturgeon Point on Lake Erie. The lighthouse was subsequently moved inland, and marks the entrance to the Sturgeon Point Water Treatment Plant.

Apparently, the ornate sign on the small stone tower reads "Site of Sturgeon Point Water Treatment Plant - Erie County Water Authority." However, the sign was unreadable during our visit.

Sturgeon Point Light

Directions: From Buffalo, travel roughly 20 miles south on NY State Route 5 south past Wanekah. Travel about 6.5 miles south of Wanekah, turn right on Sturgeon Point Road (Jerusalem Corners Elementary School is at the intersection), and right on Old Lakeshore Road. The lighthouse is on the left. (If traveling from Buffalo, it is actually faster to travel south on Interstate 90 and cross over to State Route 5, which runs along the shore.) (September 2006)
