Borden Flats Lighthouse

Borden Flats sketch

Borden Flats Light is located in Fall River, Massachusetts - on the southeastern shore. The city is approximately 20 miles from Plymouth. The lighthouse was built in 1881 near the Braga Bridge, which crosses the Taunton River. The lighthouse was built of cast iron plates on a concrete caisson base. The lighthouse originally housed a fourth-order Fresnel lens. The caisson was widened after the hurricane of 1938. The lighthouse was automated in 1963. The Fresnel lens was replaced by a modern optic in 1977. A fog bell served until 1983, when it was replaced by a modern fog horn.

The Borden Flats Light was named after the Borden family, who were very prominent at the time. It would be many years later that the family's most famous member, Lizzy Borden, would be charged and acquitted of murdering her parents.

The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation. Some renovation work was performed in 2002. As of 2006, the light has been made available per the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.
