Wings Neck Lighthouse

Wings Neck sketch

Wings Neck in Pocasset is a peninsula near the southwest end of the Cape Cod Canal, which extends into Buzzard's Bay. In 1849, a lighthouse was established - a building with a lantern room on the roof. A Fresnel lens was installed in 1856. The structure was damaged by fire in 1878, but continued to serve until 1890, when a new octagonal tower and keeper's house were built. In 1914, when the Cape Cod Canal opened, the keeper Wallace Eldridge's wife Louise spent seven years as the canal dispatcher.

The lamp was switched from oil to vapor in 1914. In 1922, the keeper's house from Ned's Point light in Mattapoiset was moved by barge to the site. A steel skeleton tower was built in 1943, which houses radar for the canal approach.

In 1921, President Warren G. Harding's yacht, the Mayflower anchored in bad weather off Wings Neck. Keeper Eldridge gave the yacht a 21-gun salute with the fog signal the morning after the yacht anchored, and again when it left.

With the construction of Cleveland Ledge Light in Buzzard's Bay, the light was deemed non-essential. The light was decommissioned in 1945 and sold to private ownership in 1947. The new owners, Frank and Irene Flanagan, lovingly cared for their retirement home until 1999, when Irene passed away. In 2003, the property was completely renovated. Today, it is available for weekly rentals.
