Great Shoals Lighthouse

Great Shoals sketch

Great Shoals lighthouse was built in 1884 at the mouth of the Wicomico River on Maryland's Eastern Shore to support thew local oyster trade and allow vessels traveling upriver to navigate the shoal. Construction was done remarkably rapidly. The tender Jessamine arrived at the site on June 17, 1884, and the fixed fifth-order lens first displayed on August 15.

In 1966, the hexagonal screwpile light was discontinued. The lighthouse was dismantled and replaced with an automated beacon on the screwpile foundation.
