Grand Island Lighthouse

Grand Island sketch

The present tower on Grand Island, NY (on the Niagara River) was constructed in 1917. The site actually is composed of a pair of range lights - the wooden octagonal front range light and a skeleton rear range light. The light is no longer active.

Grand Island Lighthouse

From Across the Niagara River

Directions: The lighthouse is on the grounds of the Buffalo Launch Club on Grand Island, NY (on the Niagara River between Buffalo and Niagara Falls). The grounds are closed to the public, although "polite visitors are welcome." (Oleszewski, p. 55) The lighthouse can be viewed from several locations. The lighthouse can be viewed from across the river by taking Interstate 190 toward Grand Island (from Buffalo) and exiting on the last exit before Grand Island (route 266 - River Road). Travel south on River Road about a mile - the lighthouse can be viewed from the parking lot of a small marina on the other side of the river. To get a closer look, cross over into Grand Island and take the Grand Island Blvd. exit. Turn left (west) on Staley Road. Travel about 0.5 miles, and turn left on Base Line Road. Travel about 0.5 miles, and turn left on Love Road. Travel another 0.5 miles, and turn right on East River Road. (The lighthouse can be seen near this intersection.) From East River Road, turn left on Towerwood Road. The lighthouse is at the end of the road. (The Buffalo Launch Club is on Bush Road, which is the next left.)

Note that the lighthouse is private property. Please respect the privacy of the owners.

An earlier tower can be seen at the lighthouse in Dunkirk. (September 2006)
