Point Petre Lighthouse

Point Petre sketch

The original light at Point Petre, on the southwestern tip of Prince Edward County, Ontario, was built in 1833. The 62 foot tower was identical in design to the tower at Nine Mile Point. In the 1960's, structural weakness in the tower led to its demolition. A new 50-foot cylindrical tower was built in 1967. The new tower stands on the grounds of an environmental research area.

Point Petre

Directions: From Highway 401, take exit 525 (Trenton) to Highway 33 (Loyalist Parkway). Follow Highway 33 south to Picton. Travel south on Highway 10 from Picton through Cherry Valley to Highway 24. Continue south on Highway 24 until it ends at Point Petre. The light can easily be viewed from outside the gate of the research area, or you may ask permission to enter from the person at the house by the gate. (Note - the roads in Prince Edward County are all small winding country roads - a good map is strongly suggested, as we took a few wrong turns while exploring the area.) (September 2006)
