Queen's Wharf Lighthouse

Queen's Wharf sketch

In 1861, a pair of range lights marked the only safe passage to Toronto Harbour, near the original foot of Bathurst Street. The lighthouses served until 1911 (according to the marker on the lighthouse), when a new western entrance to Toronto Harbour was completed. The lights were discontinued and fell into disrepair. One tower was torn down, but the other was moved in 1929 some 450 meters to its current location - a park near the entrance to Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto.

Directions: From the Spadina Ave. exit of the Gardiner Expressway (Highway 2), go west on West Lakeshore Boulevard. The lighthouse is at West Lakeshore and Fleet St. (which veers to the right of Lakeshore). The lighthouse is in a park near the Princes Gate of Exhibition Place. (Note - traffic in downtown Toronto can be quite heavy - bring a good street map with you!) (September 2006)
