Salmon Point Lighthouse

Salmon Point sketch

Salmon Point (also known as Wicked Point) marks a hazardous area along the western shore of Prince Edward County, Ontario. The forty-foot tall lighthouse was built in 1871, and served until 1917, when shipping traffic in the area diminished. The building and tower are now a part of the Salmon Point Campgrounds.

Now part of a campground

Directions: From Highway 401, take exit 525 (Trenton) to Highway 33 (Loyalist Parkway). Follow Highway 33 south to Picton. From Picton, travel south on Highway 10 through Cherry Valley to Highway 18. Travel west on Highway 18. At a bend in the road, which veers north toward Outlet, there is a sideroad with a sign for Salmon Point Campgrounds. (There are several roadside signs at the bend.) Follow this road to the end. There is a small day-use fee to enter the campgrounds. The lighthouse itself is a private residence, but the surrounding grounds are open. (When we visited, one of the owners happened to be mowing the lawn outside the lighthouse, and told us it was OK to walk around the site.) (Note - the roads in Prince Edward County are all small winding country roads - a good map is strongly suggested, as we took a few wrong turns while exploring the area.) (September 2006)
