Stony Point Lighthouse

Stony Point sketch

The original lighthouse at Stony Point was built in 1830, to mark the entrance to Henderson Harbor. The foundation of this lighthouse can still be seen. The current tower replaced the original in 1869. The design of the tower and keeper's residence was similar to that of Horse Island.

The first keeper, Wiley Gilbert Nickles, served Stony Point despite having lost both arms in a Fourth of July celebration accident in Sackets Harbor. He was provided with artificial limbs which allowed him to eat and write. Nickles completed the government paperwork and reports while his wife and family handled the day to day maintenance of the station.

The tower served until 1947, when it was deactivated and sold as a private residence. A 1966 fire in a nearby barn damaged the lighthouse, but the structure was restored by the owners.

Stony Point - Now a Private Residence

Stony Point Light

Directions: On Route 3, turn west onto Military Road (County Road 178). (There is a blinker at the intersection.) Travel approximately 1.3 miles to Lighthouse Road. Lighthouse Road is unmarked, but has a sign pointing left to Rays Bay and the lighthouse. Drive 1.8 miles to a fork, and take the right fork 2.6 miles to the lighthouse. The lighthouse is a private residence, but there is a good view from the road. When we visited in June 1999, the residence was up for sale.

Note that the lighthouse is private property. Please respect the privacy of the owners. (September 2006)
